A Conversation with Dr. Woody Register

The Episcopal Church has a particular place in the history of the southern United States. The very fact of the existence of the University of the South speaks to this complex relationship. What role have The Episcopal Church and individual Episcopalians played in the story of this region? How have their stories been told or shaped depending on the teller? Have the versions we tell today distorted our view of the past and what it means for this moment?

Having studied these questions, and many others, Dr. Woody Register has generously made himself available to talk with Episcopal groups about his work and its implications for our discernment. As the University of the South has delved into its past, Sewanee has made some decisions about who will and won’t be celebrated with public monuments; however, Dr. Register cautions against taking a “one size fits all” approach to the question of monuments in our midst.
