Trinity Sunday, May 31, 2026

The prelude for Trinity Sunday is based on hymn 366, "Holy God, We Praise Your Name", a 17th century tune, and is by the American composer I often use, Wilbur Held (1914-2015).  I will play through the hymn before playing Mr. Held's somewhat baroque like setting.

We will process with what is probably the most "iconic" hymn for this Sunday, "Holy, Holy, Holy". 362,   In second place might be the Gospel hymn, "Come, thou Almighty King", 365.  As you may note in the hymnal, this is only slightly older than 365, the melody coming from the late 18th century.

The anthem is Beethoven's paraphrased setting of Psalm 19, "The Heavens Are Telling", The music is actually an adaptation of a song that he wrote earlier, but it certainly has become one of the most famous anthems of all time.

Communion hymns are "Let thy Blood in mercy poured" (313), and "Thou, at Thy first Eucharist didst pray" (315).

Closing, we will sing the famous 19th century Welsh hymn. "Immortal, Invisible, God only wise" (423).

The postlude is a setting of "Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven" (410), by the American, Kenneth T. Kosche (b.1947), who has been associated mostly with the Lutheran Church and who has taught at Concordia University.
