News from The Lord's Acre of Fletcher, the Thursday after Easter begins here...On Thursday night a passionate group of garden volunteers were directed by our Garden Manager, Doug Kearney, to plant tomatoes in the hoophouse. He had prepared a poster with the steps to follow. Basically, you dug a 6" hole and a shallow trench from the hole. The tomatoes roots were placed on its side and then you covered the stem with soil up to the leaves of this 12" plant. Doug assured us that the plant would be vertical by the next morning. At 8:45am on my way to assist with stocking the shelves at the pantry, I drove to the garden to check on these horizontal tomato plants. Lo and behold they were all standing up in a vertical position. Could these be Resurrection Tomato Plants?!
We are preparing for the annual Rummage and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 8:00-1:00. Donations have been incredible! Linda wants everyone to know that we have everything from binoculars, Barbie dolls, furniture, sports and garden items, to a vintage Rocking Horse.
Chef Martha prepared a Cinco de Mayo Rice Taco Bowl, a Chopped Greek Salad, and a Jezebel Sauce for WLOS Carolina Kitchen segment. She demonstrates recipes from items found in our pantry and offers a taste and a recipe to our neighbors on Saturdays.
Dr. Colette Salm-Schmid, oncologist from Advent Health, spoke with Doug about an opportunity for cancer survivors to participate in a once-a-week six-session program called Gardens of Hope at The Lord's Acre Garden and to have time for "hands in the dirt." One of the goals is to apply the learnings to home gardens. At the end of the first session, participants were asked if growing their own food would improve their physical, emotional well-being, and feed their spirit.
We welcomed 114 families representing 378 individuals and eleven new families. The eleven new families represent a total of 37 family members. We continue to need volunteers who can help with Spanish registrations. Once a month would be very helpful!
On behalf of our Pantry Board, we express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous food and monetary donations to our pantry. Your donations will make a significant impact on the lives of those in our community who are struggling with food insecurity.
