Calvary
Church
has a strong
history of outreach to the community, dating from its very first days. Not
only do parishioners raise funds that help at home and abroad, they roll up
their sleeves and actively collect, cook, and construct to help those their
own community.
Calvary
is committed
to involving its youth in community outreach as well. Middle and High school
students have served meals, worked at the local food pantry, caroled at a
retirement home and walked for charity.
Food
Baskets
– Canned and packaged food is collected every Sunday as part of the
offering. This food is divided between the Asheville-Buncombe County Christian
Ministries (ABCCM) food bank and the Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM) in
Hendersonville
.
Homeless
Shelter Meals – Each month for the past several years, volunteers have
prepared food, delivered it to the ABCCM shelter in
Asheville
and served
dinner to the residents. The menus are varied and are published in the
bi-monthly newsletter. Volunteers are always needed, and new volunteers are
welcome.
Habitat
for Humanity –
The Episcopal parishes in the
Asheville area sponsor building a Habitat house in
Buncombe
County
every other
year. In October 2007 we will begin Episcopal House VII in the Enka
community. Calvary's part includes $5,000 and lots of volunteers.
If you would be interested in helping out, please contact the parish office
or John Worley for information.
Calvary
Care Fund
– This fund was established to provide for basic human needs among people in
Buncombe and
Henderson
Counties
. As
determined by their Board of Trustees, the fund intends to assist individuals
or families who have special needs that extend beyond the scope of their
personal income.
Memorial
Education Fund – This fund provides grants or loans to help local students
further their education.
Other
Outreach Projects –
Calvary’s Outreach efforts include Thompson
Children’s Home, United Thank Offering (UTO), Episcopal Relief & Development
projects,
the "Souper-Bowl" of Caring and the All Saints Offering. Additionally, several
Calvary
groups raise
money through barbeques and food sales for their own outreach projects.

Outreach
is not necessarily confined to those who are in need of the world’s goods.
Calvary
is also
committed to spiritual outreach by being a welcoming community for those
seeking a new way to express their faith.
New
Member Ministry – Provides hospitality by welcoming and informing visitors and
incorporating new members into life at
Calvary
Church. Members
make phone calls to welcome visitors, serve as shepherds to smooth the way for
visitors and newcomers, bake read for visitor gift bags, and write articles
and take photos of new members so they can be welcomed by the community at
large.
