The prelude is based on the most familiar "I am the bread of life", 335 in our hymnal, and is an arrangement by Ron Schmoltze (1936-2018), a graduate of the famous music school at Oberlin College and an organist who had several volumes of published organ preludes.  After a calm and introspective introduction, you will recognize the melody immediately.

Our 19th century English hymn (20th c. text), 607, will also be familiar.  Likewise, the Gospel hymn you will know, although it actually dates back to the 16th century, with a text going back to the 2nd century!

Until September,  when the choir returns, we will mostly be singing hymns together at the offertory; some of you have said that you enjoy this very much.  The day's hymn will be "Spread, O spread, thou mighty word", 530.

During communion, there are 2 more familiar hymns-- 698, "Eternal Spirit of the living Christ, I know not how to ask or what to say", and 632, "O Christ, the Word Incarnate, O Wisdom from on high".  I think both of these are well loved by most.

Closing we will sing "God is working his purpose out", 534, which we have not sung in some time, but which I think people know and enjoy.

The postlude is based on a very recognizable hymn -- "All who hunger, gather gladly", a Shaker tune not in our hymnal (but still familiar).  The setting is by the prolific American composer, Wilbur Held (1921-2021), whose music has become a staple for many organists.

Though we won't have choristers present in the chancel, many will be among the congregation.  As you can and are inspired, please thank as many as you are able, for their service.  They work hard!
